Title: Fact Sheet: Reference Conditions and Historical Changes in an Unharvested Ponderosa Pine Stand on Sedimentary Soil

Subject: Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), Sedimentary Soil, Reference conditions
Abstract: Forest structure and tree spatial patterns are the result of a complex interplay among historical and environ-mental mechanisms such as climate, disturbance, species life history, competition, microclimatic, soil prop-erties, and past land uses. Analysis of tree spatial patterns provides insight into stand development and dy-namics including tree establishment, competition, and mortality and when quantified over long temporal pe-riods can aid in developing restoration prescriptions and predicting future stand development and manage-ment outcomes.
